Scripture Memorization Techniques

April 27, 2011

Scripture memorization is an activity that I feel ambivalent about.  Too often people memorize scripture but don’t memorize the context. Sometimes people will even memorize a scripture without even understanding what it truly means.

On the other hand, having some scriptures memorized can allow you to encourage others or pass along words of wisdom when they are needed.

I think the book of Proverbs is a great place to find scriptures to memorize because many proverbs are intended to be memorized and they retain their meaning when removed from the surround text.

E.g.

He who is quick to become angry will commit folly (Proverbs 14:;17)

or

He who despises his neighbor sins, but blessed is he who has pity on the poor (Proverbs 14:21)

Anyway, King Solomon was the wisest person to ever live so you can’t go wrong learning some of his words of wisdom.

Remember though, more important than memorizing scripture is understanding what it means so be sure to think about what the proverb (or any scripture) meant to the people it was originally intended for.

Please post scripture memorization techniques that have worked for you.
